Young Thug - Punk Review
Updated: Nov 7, 2022

Has Mr. Thugger finally pulled it off? Has he delivered yet another masterpiece for stans to worship? Or will this sophomore album just be a stick in the slime. Well...the answer lies somewhere in between. As someone who was never the biggest Young Thug fan, I always appreciated the indie sound he has come into. Although I do struggle to understand Mr. Thugger's genius sometimes, "PUNK" is the clearest he has ever sounded. In my opinion, it only helps the overall quality of music throughout the album. Thugger is also the most open about his personal life on this project. Even though the overall bar of quality is raised, the results are very mixed.
THE HEAT:
Stressed (ft. J. Cole & T-Shyne)
Faces
Droppin Jewels
These 3 songs showcase Young Thug showing off some lyrical chops along with excellent beat selection. J. Cole's feature is a show stealer and continues the more aggressive style from his 2021 release "A M A R I". The production is rich and Thug uses his adlibs as another instrument, which adds a bit of extra character to each track. There is no wasted space.
THEY COOL:
Stupid/Asking
Contagious
Livin It Up (ft. Post Malone & A$AP Rocky)
Bubbly (ft. Travis Scott & Drake)
Day Before (ft. Mac Miller)
The Cool tracks all pretty much suffer from the same problem. Young Thug is trying to not be boxed into one genre throughout the album, but in doing so, his emulation of different genres sounds very stereotypical. They don't push any of the sounds in a new direction but might be worth a listen depending on how much you like indie, mosh pit, or hip-pop music.
THEY AIIIIIIGHT:
Recognize Real (ft. Gunna)
Peepin Out The Window (ft. Future & Bslime)
Yea Yea Yea
Fifth Day Dead
Pretty boring tracks that don't really say much. Worth a listen or two, but not much happening here. Strange production decisions make some parts of these tracks borderline annoying to listen to.
SKIPS:
Die Slow (ft. Strick)
Rich N***a Shit (ft. Juice WRLD)
Insure my Wrist (ft. Gunna)
Scoliosis (ft. Lil Double O)
Road Rage
Icy Hot (ft. Doja Cat)
Love You More (ft. Nate Ruess, Gunna & Jeff Bhasker)
Hate The Game
There's some potential here, but it's buried by some VERY unnecessary trash. This group continues the trend of stereotyping the sound of different genres and pile drives it through the dumpster.
FINAL VERDICT: 5/10
Pretty hard to listen to the whole project front to back, and the cherry-picked tracks are not worth the journey.
